1st week as a tripawd

Well we made it through our first week as a tripod! Go roane!Β  I wont say it was easy,Β  but all things considered we did pretty well. Roane is healing nicely, shes still a little shaky and unbalanced. We’re hopeful that when she stops taking the pain meds she will be a little more solid. Shes been moving around more and more. She even walked all the way over to the garden yesterday for a nice nap in the grass while mom and moe cat did some weeding. When we came back from the garden she insisted on trying the big stairs to the front porch! Only 5 steps but it looked like a mountain to mom! She did it with mom spotting her with the grocery bag sling. πŸŽ‰πŸΎπŸŽ‰πŸΎ

Eating this week has been a little challenging. For a big girl roane eats suprisingly little and when it gets hot out she eats even less. We’ve been spoiling her with some extra special food to get her medication in her.

I think we have also managed to get to the itchy portion of her incision healing.Β  Mom walked away for a minute lastnight since roane was sleeping like a log. Suprise! Jokes on mom, roane was not sleeping and had a good lick at her stitches! Naughty roane! Now you get the funny hat!

We still have a bit to go but the sparkle is starting to come back! Thank you tripawd friends we couldnt have made it through the week with out you cheering us on!

  1. so happy Roane is doing well! Today is my dog’s 3 week mark as a tripawd, he is almost 7 and a 140 lb English mastiff, front leg, due to osteosarcoma. Once he came off the meds he was so much better, the shaking stopped, his appetite increased, it made me so happy because I was feeling so bad. I hope Roane continues to improve!

    1. Happy 3 week ampuversary! Thank you for confirming my thoughts on the meds. Its also nice to hear other giant breed tripawds are doing so well. Love my big dogs!

  2. HAPPY ONE WEEK AMPUVERSARY BEAUTIFUL ROANE!! And you are beautiful!! I could look at pictures of your sweet self furever!!

She really, really is doing so well for one week out! Amd doing stairs (even with help, that counts) is a true testament to her determination!!

And yeah, whatever yummy food you can get her to eat at this point is good. Nutrition can come later! Try Fresh Pet. It’s in the refrigerator section of Whole Foods, as well as Target. Cheeseburgers, scrambled eggs with cheese and a little bacon…..whatever works for now.
As Cheryl said, you will see a difference when the meds are tapered off. What a punt if meds is she on now, frequency, dose amounts, etc.
But really, you have noooo worries. Roane is doing a spectacular job this early, espec fot a big gal!!!

    Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

  4. This totally made my day! There is nothing that makes us happier than seeing the transition from fearful to fabulously hopeful. You have it down, my friend! Your baby Roane is doing so well, she is getting there on her own time and she’s doing great. And you, well you are letting her do her thing without babying her too much. That is big! Congrats to all of you for a superb recovery.

Appetite should pick up when she’s off the meds. For now, yep, the stinker, gamier and more novel the food, the better. With you as her own personal chef there are surely things out there that will get her chowing down again. Check out the Tripawds Nutrition blog for appetite tips, if I haven’t already sent this to you:
